This is a Macho phone. As the purchase guy slowly passing the phone on my request for photo shooting, this is his comment. I was a bit surprised when I heard of that comment. A Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phone designed to appeal to men? But when I looked at the phone and the stuff coming with it, I kind of agreed that the new C702 has been designed as an outdoor camera for active people. Or at least makes you look like a tough guy.

The package comes with a Battery, a Charger, a USB cable, a Handsfree, a wrist strap with a Karabiner (!?), a CD and Manual.


Being a tough guy does not need to be very big in size though. C702 indeed is small in size, just similar to the W810 type candy bar phones. However, the masculine image is being projected from the stainless steel with black rubber casing. Well, may be the light blue colour version will look a bit more feminine.

Ok, the strap holder is made of metal. And you have to unscrew the lock to take off the back cover. Why is it designed in this way? Since the C702 is designed for anti-dust (dirt?) and splash resistance. So sweat and a little splash of rain should be resisted to get into the phone. Well, my recommendation is… don’t try to dip it into water. I don’t think it is that water resistant indeed.


3.2 mega pixel auto focus with lens cover and flash light. This is Cyber-shot. The lens cover is specially designed to be usable in one hand to increase the capability of one hand point and shoot.


The M2 memory stick card slot can be opened without any unlocking. You just have to pull it open by your finger nail with some force. It has water resistance rubber on the cover to get rid of water and dust. However I still think you’d better not try to dip it into water.

The keypad buttons are made with metal and clear plastic which magnified the numbers and texts. Although it is not designed in a very large keypad layout, however the touch and sensitivity is still very good.

The C702 comes with GPS and Google Map. With GPS, the photos can be attached with Geotagging that the picture can be categorized by where you took them.


This is a Cyber-shot, it has face detection. But even detected Mr. Mario as face? Well, the actual face detection is running a little bit slower than the Sony Camera’s face detection technology. And real cameras will not think Mr. Mario is a real face… Anyway, it is fun to have that to increase the accuracy of point and shoot focusing.

Similar to the K850 Cyber-shot phones, the right hand side buttons have camera shortcuts, in blue this time.


Actual photo image taken by the 3.2 mega pixel cyber-shot in an indoor environment. The image looks sharper than the other Sony Ericsson phone.

With the dual LED flash on. Of course the flash is neither Xenon nor Photoflash. Just regular LED flash light.


As I will be able to test out the C902 very soon, let me see if the pricier C902 will be better than this macho outdoor Cyber-shot other than just some mega pixel upgrades. For me, even this 3.2 mega pixel is fine for photo shooting as long as the whole functional balance of the total package is good enough.
