The 6600 fold is a flip phone with a crystal-like surface. The front surface is smooth and slightly reflective and beneath it lays a single-color OLED display. The phone can certainly come ahead in beauty contests but does it have enough functions for your everyday use? Let’s find out now.
The package comes with the phone, a battery and a charger, a handsfree, a USB cable and a user’s guide. It also comes with a tiny pouch for you to carry it around safely. It only has 15MB internal memory so you will need an optional microSD card for storing your music collection.
The transparent protection sheet invites you to tap the phone twice. What happens after the double-tapping? Well depending on the situation it can reject call, display time or show you the new messages. Since it is a single-color display you can’t expect it to play videos like the Motorola V9. Regrettably there is no heat-sensitive buttons for controlling music.
While the large keys are responsive and easy to use, they don’t quite match the elegant feeling of the exterior surface.
The 2MP camera comes with a double-LED flash but it does not have auto-focus or optical zoom. Image quality is about average. It also has a front camera for 3G video call.
The phone is 15.9mm thick when folded, which is quite thick even for a flip phone. There is a release button located on the right side, press it to unfold the phone smoothly without effort.
The phone comes with a stereo handsfree made by Nokia. The handsfree does a reasonable job in blocking external noise but it is not good enough for music. You may need to buy a good pair of earphones to fully explore the high fidelity music delivered by the 6600 fold.
I think it is correct to put the microSD slot beneath the battery. The slot will literally ruin the beautiful design if it is placed on the sides of the phone.
It’s the S40 interface again. This interface had been with us for quite a long time, maybe it’s time for a change, Nokia! The phone has some useful software such as Nokia Maps and Opera Mini but they are not very useful without the appropriate hardware (GPS and a high-speed data connection).
The phone has the usual music enhancement features such as equalizer and Stereo Widening. The latter feature increases the difference heard by your left and right ear when you are listening to a stereo track.
I like the design and operation of the phone a lot. The phone comes with some really useful software, but they are limited by the lack of hardware support (GPS/HSDPA). If you can cope with the 1.6cm thickness and mediocre camera, this phone may be your perfect match.
