I have to admit, I was attracted by the glossy pinky colour surface of the phone. I did not know much about the phone and guessed it is just a nice looking Pebble flip from Motorola.

Strangely, it is not named after the “stone”. The name is U9 on it own. So what is it? You may need to ask Moto. I can only tell from the features that it is probably a music phone, since it can display and control music playing by touching the front cover. Somehow, it looks and feels like a Sony Ericsson W380. You can fast-forward, play, and rewind by touching on the front cover. And all those music titles and stuff glows and appears on the nice glossy cover. Or is it a copy of the dated z610? They looked 95% the same….

Well may be we should start checking out the photos and see what is the deal.

Isn't it beautiful? The boxing design from Motorola is always very attractive. Black box to display a pink phone.


The package comes with a charger, USB cable, battery, micro SD (depending on the retail package), earphones, CD, and manual. Pretty standard stuff.


Comparing the physical size to SE W580 (Sorry, I don't have a w380 on hand). It is shorter and thinner. Also the glossy smooth surface is not bad right?


Another angle, they are almost the same in thickness.


On the side, U9 is only slightly thicker in height. So you can see the U9 is a small and thin phone. As for weight, it is not ultra light. But it weighted similar to the w580. Not bad at all.


Flipped open, U9 has a very nice shape as a clamshell as well.


The keypad layout is very Motorola. Flat metallic keys with good sensitivity and control, this is actually a good thing from Motorola.


In close up, you can see the texture and quality of the keys.


2 inches 240 x 380 standard screen. The colour and brightness is good. However, somehow I still love the W580 screen more.



The included earphones is quite standard. It is not a 3.5mm jack earphone nor does it have an adaptor coming with it. So forget about using your best headphones. May be this is why the U9 is not branded as a music phone.



Ok this is the fun part. On the front cover, when you are playing music, the song title appears with the music control button. You can actually touch on the fast-forward button to skip this song. It is like the Sony Ericsson W380, which you can use it like a mp3 player. However, unlike the well thoughtful W380, you cannot turn on the music player without flip opening the phone. I also tested the speaker; the sound quality is impressive. I can enjoy listening to music without the earphones (hope I will not be smashed by colleagues sitting around me as I am too noisy.)


Other than it is somehow like a copy cat of the Sony Ericsson phones, the phone quality is solid and good. As this quandband phone is not expensive, consider it had packed with many features; it is not a bad choice at all.

It is a Motorola, of course you can use it in the US and Canada without any concern.
