Sony’s Alpha-series has been one of the leading roles in DSLR market. But this time, the company has rejected the traditional DSLR design and instead created a hybrid like a compact camera plus a DSLR. It can offer features such as phase-detection AF during movie recording and extremely fast continuous shooting that mark the technology milestone of DSLR cameras.

Let’s go through some of the key features A55 has. It has got 16.2MP resolution, a Sony home-made Exmor HD CMOS which offers at most 25600 ISO. It also brings 1080i Full HD movie capturing in A55, making it the first of all in the Alpha-series to have such function. Sony also introduces the 3D Sweep Panorama function to A55 to incorporate the company’s latest promotion of the technology.
The mirror of A55 is the most significant that makes it a revolutionist of DSLR in the whole market. The mirror in the A55 is semi-transparent. According to Sony, it allows approximately 70% of the light that strikes it straight through to the imaging sensor. The remaining proportion is reflected upwards to a large 15-point phase detection AF array.
Another most obvious change is the high-resolution EVF (100%) in place of an optical finder; and a fully articulated 3-inch 912k dot TruBlack LCD at the back. Both upgrades claim the first for the Sony Alpha line.
Near the LCD on the rear are some control buttons including the Movie button, Fn button and a control ring etc.
At the top of A55, apart from the power and shutter button, it has the the ‘Finder/LCD’ button for you to choose from the two.
The control dial is placed near the menu button at the top right side.
The A55 has a built-in GPS receiver, which can automatically tag photographs with location data. This can be used with Google Maps which is pretty convenient to users when travelling overseas.
In general, the Sony A55 is a powerful, innovative and user-friendly DSLR camera. As a brand new state-of-the-art hi-tech device, it still hasn’t got any competitors at the same level.
